Polygon Wood Cemetery & Buttes New British Cemetery

Polygon Wood Cemetery
Polygon Wood is a large wood 1.6 kilometres south of the village of Zonnebeke. During the First World War, the forest was completely destroyed. The Polygon Wood Cemetery lies next to the Polygon Wood. On the cemetery are 103 Commonwealth soldiers and one German soldier buried. The cemetery consists of 2 parts. On the first part stands a cross, on the second part are the graves.

Buttes New British Cemetery
The cemetery is situated in the Polygoon Wood and was built by combining different cemeteries after the First World War. There are 2103 soldiers buried of whom 1675 soldiers couldn’t be identified. For 23 New Zealand soldiers and 12 British, “Special Memorials” were set up. A “New Zealand Memorial” was placed, with the names of 383 New Zealand soldiers that died in the surrounding area. On top of a hill stands an obelisk dedicated to the 5th Australian Division. The monument commemorates their effort during the First World War.
