Albert I Memorial

The war memorial was built in 1938 according to the design of Julien de Ridder. It is situated in Nieuwpoort on the right bank of the Yzer close to the lock complex. The monument was built in honour of the Belgian King Albert I and the Belgian soldiers that fought during the First World War. The monument has a round ground plan, with a diameter of 30 metres. Central in the square stands a statue of Albert I on horseback. From the top of the monument there is a good view over the town and its surroundings. On the square in front of the Albert I monument is erected a monument for the English troops. This monument consists out of a memorial pillar with the names of killed soldiers on it.
